ACP discusses NDC Progress and Successes during Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

Brussels, 04 September 2019: Dr Pendo Maro, team leader of the Intra-ACP GCCA+ Programme – an initiative of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group funded by the European Development Fund (EDF) – recently chaired a panel discussion on the progress and successes of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in the Caribbean region during the Regional Dialogue on NDCs for Latin America and the Caribbean. The Regional Dialogue was held on 19 to 20 August during the Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2019 (LACCW), from 19 to 23 August in Salvador de Bahía, Brazil.

Dr. Maro has been meeting with ACP counterparts to see how best the ACP Group can support its member states to review and update their NDC processes through the development of an on-line tool. The Tool, to be presented at the UN Climate Summit in September, is expected to provide information on support, guidelines and a set of templates in support of the NDC revision/update process. Dr. Maro met with Pacific stakeholders in Fiji at the Regional Training workshop on NDCs, ICTU and Accounting for the Pacific from 16-18 July 2019 and with her counterparts in the Caribbean region during the LACCW.

The Regional NDC Dialogue for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of three in the UN Development Programme / United Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNDP/UNFCCC) Dialogue Series that is taking place this year, as part of the Regional Climate Weeks. Amidst growing calls for stronger and faster climate action, the LACCW aims to boost the region’s response to the ongoing climate emergency. Current national climate action plans are insufficient to achieve the goal of the Paris Agreement of limiting global warming to as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius. LACCW, in this regard, takes place at a critical moment as governments prepare to submit the next round of NDCs by 2020. Monitoring and updating their progress in this regard, is crucial for ACP countries, which are often more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and have a vested interest in limiting global warming and its consequences.

The Regional Dialogue featured a dynamic schedule of activities to demonstrate increasing climate ambition across the Caribbean and Latin American Region. To boost ambition and accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the results of the LACCW will feed into the outcome of the Climate Action Summit organized by the UN Secretary-General on 23 September in New York. The ACP Group of States in collaboration with the European Commission and the Alliance for Small Island States (AOSIS) will host an event on 26 September during the Climate Action Summit in New York.
