All eyes on CARIFORUM as EPA benchmark

Paramaribo, Suriname, 27 November 2012/ ACP: As the sole region out of seven ACP negotiating blocs to sign a full free trade deal the European Union (EU), the fate of the CARIFORUM-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) will likely influence EU trade talks with other groupings.

 

Caribbean Heads urge innovation, stronger voice for ACP Group

Paramaribo, Suriname, 25 November 2012/ ACP: The President of Suriname joined fellow Head of State from Guyana in welcoming parliamentary delegates from the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group last weekend, calling for stronger economic cooperation amongst its 79 member states, less reliance on foreign aid, and a united voice on global development issues.

ACP Secretary General honoured with the Order of the Palm

Paramaribo, Suriname, 22 November 2012/ ACP: The Secretary General for the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group H.E Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas was decorated Commander of the Order of the Palm by the President of Suriname on Thursday, in a special ceremony at the Royal Torarica Hotel.

The honour is reserved for special merits in the civilian or military area.

Political talks kick off ACP parliamentary sessions in Suriname

Paramaribo, Suriname, 22 November 2012/ ACP: ACP parliamentary sessions opened today with the Committee of Political Affairs hearing updates on critical situations in ACP states, including the crises in Somalia, Mali, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Resolutions on these topics are expected at the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly (JPA) next week.

16 November 2012: The Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, H.E Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas expressed his sadness at the passing away today of former Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.

 

Mixed progress for ACP-EU trade agreements

Brussels, 31 October 2012/ ACP: Long-running talks on Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between some members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group and the European Union move ahead at a mired pace, despite best efforts on both sides.
 

At last week’s joint ministerial trade meeting in Brussels, the ACP Co-Chair, Fiji’s Minister of Trade and Industry Mr Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum called for a review of European ambitions, after nearly a decade of negotiations.
 

ACP preferences to erode as EU trade with third countries thrive

Brussels, 30 October 2012/ ACP: Trade preferences traditionally enjoyed by the ACP Group from the EU are now under threat, as the major 27-member bloc wraps up even more free trade deals with non-ACP third countries.

Brussels, 24 October 2012/ WTO/ ACP: Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Pascal Lamy stressed the ACP’s “instrumental role” in moving the trade debate forward at the meeting of ACP Ministers of Trade in Brussels today at the ACP House in Brussels.
